According to The Daily Herald, the residents of tree-lined streets in Arlington Heights are turning to one man to solve the problem of tree destruction. Sam Moser has taken action with the help of others he has recruited to treat 130 ash trees on the parkways in hopes of preventing their death from insects.
In Arlington Heights, more than 13,000 of the 36,000 parkway or streetside trees are ashes. Although Moser does not even have ashes by his property, he is trying to protect the streetscape. “When you come home from work at night and turn the corner, do you want to see a beautiful tree-lined street or not?”
After an educational campaign, Moser collected funds from owners of about 80 of the 350 homes in the subdivision. Residents also contributed to save 20 trees on their own property, causing the price dropped to $95 per tree.
Although treatment can be very expensive for a few trees because of issues such as dealing with multiple homeowners, the costs drop considerably with volume. In addition, research shows that selected trees can effectively be treated, even if others in the immediate area remain infected with insects.

Dead ash trees have to be cut down quickly regardless of the expense because their large branches can fall on people and property. “The point that we’re really trying to get across, you don’t have to treat every single tree. Treat the high value ones,” Moser said. “The ash is a very important tree, tough, durable.”
